TERESA ADKINS
Teresa Jane “Granny” Adkins, 65, of Sycamore Ridge Road in Hurricane, passed away after a long illness. Born August 25, 1959 to the late Harley Allen and Thelma Jane (Thomas) Clark, Teresa had the sweetest nature and was loved by all. Teresa was a devoted, loving mother to her sons and dedicated caregivers Travis James Adkins, Christopher Todd Adkins and beloved grandson Isaac Hinkle. Preceeded in death by her sister Wanda Gaye Harless and brother-in-law Charles David Fizer, she is further survived by siblings Gary (Maurain) Clark, Michael Clark, Carolyn Fizer, Steven Clark, Tamara (Terry) Chapman and Traci Clark, a host of cousins, nieces and nephews
Graveside service was Saturday, December 7, at Sycamore Cemetery.

BONNIE BEAVER
Bonnie Lou Grant Beaver was called home to the Lord while surrounded by family, November 30, 2024. She was born on August 13, 1941, to parents Violet Washington Grant and Arnold Grant of Putnam County.
As a child, Bonnie attended Adda Baptist Church where she came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior. She was a 1959 graduate of Hurricane High School and served her community as an active member of the First Baptist Church of Hurricane through her work on various committees, Sunday School classes and outreach programs.
One of the greatest joys in her life was nurturing and educating children, both within her family and community. Ms. Bonnie touched the lives of countless students (and teachers) throughout her 10-year career and ministry as a Pre-School teacher at the First Baptist Academy in Hurricane.
Bonnie poured all of her efforts into her family throughout her life, serving others before herself. She enjoyed cooking for others, hosting family events “where cousins became friends”, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Bonnie was a true servant, leader and disciple of Christ. She adored her husband, exhibiting true love and friendship over their 64 years of marriage. Her strength and courage were exhibited as she provided care for her husband while simultaneously waging her own battle against cancer. While taking visitors following her husband’s passing, she stated, “ I pray every night that I can live long enough to continue caring for him.”
She is survived by a sister, Sue Carroll (Gary); her children, Gerald Beaver Jr. (Hope), Kipp Beaver (Kim), and Stacey Smith (Scott); her grandchildren, Austin Beaver (Emily), Sawyer Smith (Emily), Skye Reymond (Brady), Melanie Edge (Trevor), and Megan Downing (James); and her great-grand-children, the light of her world, Maryn & Maddox Smith, Luke Downing, and Kinley & Sydney Reymond as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Beaver; her parents, Violet and Arnold Grant; brothers, Dale Grant, Don Grant, Denver Grant, Darrell Grant, Dawson Grant, and Denzil Grant; and sisters IvaDean Barnett and Kathaleen Erwin.

WILLIAM ‘BILL’ CASTO
William Brycle “Bill” Casto, 89, of Red House, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday December 8, 2024, in the Magnolia Assisted Living.
Bill is a retired cement finisher and a member of Lone Oak Church of God Mission. He loved spending time on the farm, socializing at Casto Farm Store, and especially spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wives Roberta Harrison Casto and Reba Bush Casto; daughters Melody Mack and Melinda Arthur; and parents Clyde and Icie Casto.
Bill is survived by his two children Trent Casto and Brett Robinson; brother Gene Casto; sisters Betty Brown and Brenda King; six grandchildren Lisa (Ben) Harrison, Nichole (Ben) Hogue, Amy (Tony) Crago, Roberta (Matt) McClanahan, William (Catlin) Arthur, and Kobe Robinson; and five great grandchildren Karlie, Andrew, Skylar, Raegen, and Logan.
At his request there will be no services.

Lorane Sabine Bishop
Lorane Sabine Bishop, 62, of Hurricane, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 4, 2024, with her family by her side.
Lorane is a retired Mary Kay consultant and a member of Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene.
She is preceded in death by her father Jerry Conley and brother Stephen Conley.
Lorane is survived by her husband Gary Bishop; mother Helga Bank; children Devin (Jonathan) Downs, David (Tiffany) Clowser, Ashley Clowser, Gary Bishop, II, and Richard (Josara) Bishop; brother Ronnie (Marcia) Conley; sisters Michelle (Cetin) Kaya and Nicole Conley; grandchildren Homer, Teresa, Landon, Adaline, Cameron, Brandon, Oakland, and Hudson; fur baby Leo; and a host of other family and friends.
A tribute to the life of Lorane Bishop was held Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Charles Williams officiating.

Dianna Chapman
Dianna Lynn Chapman, 75, passed away from this world on the morning of December 8th, 2024 after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Hurricane and was married to her husband, Evert, for 54 years. Dianna loved to travel and spend time with her family and friends. She especially loved watching and supporting her great nieces and nephews in their various sports activities.
Dianna was preceded in death by her parents, Donzie and Verda Leadman, in-laws Claude and Helen Chapman, brother in law, Rick Chaney, and sister in law, Barbara Leadman, and brother in law, Dennis Dean.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, Evert Chapman, sister, Devonna Chaney of Hurricane, brother, Roger Leadman of Midlothian, Va., sister in laws, Jo Ellen Dean- Wagoner (Sonny) of Pinch, and Debbie Chapman (Angela) of Charleston. Nieces, Heather (Tyson) Miller, Leigh Ann (Sam) O’Dell, Marnie Leadman, Hillary Dean and Carly Dean, nephews, Scott Leadman and Noah Jeffries. Dianna adored her great nieces and nephews, Grace (Christian) Steadman, Seth Phillips, Carson O’Dell, Parker O’Dell, Peyton Crouch, and Kayleigh Miller.
Funeral service was Thursday, December 12th at Allen Funeral Home in Hurricane. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Cemetery in Hurricane.

Vanessa Chatterton
Vanessa Louise Chatterton, 72, of St. Albans, went home to be with our Lord Jesus after a long illness on December 6, 2024.
Vanessa was proceeded in death by her parents Rev. Kelson Ray Bays and Erma Jewel Bays; brothers Gregory Brent Bays and Stevenson Ray Bays.
She is survived by her daughter April Nettleton (Mark) of St. Albans, granddaughters Emma Simpkins (Drew) of Ona, Jessica Nettleton of Montgomery, and brother Tim Bays of Delano, CA, along with a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Vanessa was a graduate of Hurricane High School in 1969. She then went on to be a beautician. After this, she went to nursing school. She worked thirty years as a nurse in various hospitals and doctor’s offices in Florida and West Virginia. She then became a patient advocate for special needs children and adults.
Vanessa was a musician and vocalist. She was always singing or playing the piano anywhere she could. She sang in several groups, and individually since a young age. Vanessa was very strong in her faith. She loved the Lord, and her heart showed it.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, December 10, at Allen Funeral Home.

Douglas ‘Eddie’ Grant Sr.
Douglas E. “Eddie” Grant Sr., 67, of Hurricane, passed away on December 7, 2024 at his home.
Eddie was a retired mechanic, the Owner and Operator of Eleanor Tire, as well as working at local service centers over the years.
He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather: Mervin and Alberta M. Whitt Call; sisters: Karrie Grant and Baby Girl “Sis”; and brothers: Joe, Gene, Clifford, and Carl Grant; as well as a special uncle, Luther “Luke” Whitt.
Eddie is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Paulette Wray Grant; children: Maria (Christopher) LeMaster, Doug Jr. (Heather) Grant and Clifford (Ashlee) Grant; grandchildren: Mason and Madison LeMaster, Dylan, Destiny, Adrian, Brett and Alixis Grant all of Hurricane; and brothers: Timmy Call of Winfield, Ronald Grant and Mike Grant both of California; as well as several other family members.
Funeral service for Eddie will be 1:00pm Friday, December 13, 2024, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Rev. Dr. Jonathan White officiating. Burial will follow in Lower Hodges Cemetery.

Margaritte Hulley
Margaritte Kathryn Taylor Hulley, 104 years young, went to Heaven on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, surrounded by loving family and friends. Margaritte was born on Sunday, February 22, 1920, in Hurricane, West Virginia, daughter of Ada Dell Tanner Taylor and Brooklyn Dalton Taylor.
Margaritte graduated from Hurricane High School in 1938, then went into nurse’s training at Huntington Memorial Hospital, in Huntington, earning her Registered Nurse degree and internship in Charleston General Hospital, and in Philadelphia, Pa. Margaritte married Burl Newman of Lavalette, on December 1, 1940. Their life together brought them 4 children she “loved more than anything in this whole wide world”: born in 1943 Dennis Edward Newman, then Vivian Sue Newman, and in 1947 Steven Lyn Newman, and in 1950 Micky Anne Newman. They divorced in 1954. Margaritte cared for polio patients at Morris Memorial Hospital in Milton, during the polio crisis in 1952-1955, then, she transferred to the Bay Pines Veterans Admin. Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she also made her home permanent until today. She was the Chief Nurse at the Bay Pines VA Hospital. Margaritte was married to Arthur W. Hulley on December 1, 1959, until his death in 1983.
She especially loved studying Bible and writing booklets of New Testament gospels to share with family and church members. At Christian Retreat in Bradenton, Florida, she also earned a ministry certificate. She was also a traveler, loved sewing, raising gardens, and most of all her animals and dog companions she had all through her life. Margaritte became a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in St. Petersburg, Florida, and has many friends there.
Remaining to cherish her memory are her friends, and her daughter, “Suzy” Newman Atkinson, and grandson Brian Atkinson with wife Katie, with great granddaughter Ruby Kate Atkinson, and granddaughter Brooke Atkinson, plus granddaughter Andrea Newman Pullen with 2 great grandchildren, Brandi Fry and Hayden Straight, and 6 great- great grandchildren. She has many dear nieces and nephews whom she considers has her own, and they lovingly refer to her as “Aunt Pice”. Preceding Margaritte in death are her children, Dennis Newman, Steven Newman, and Micky Anne Newman, also her granddaughter, Jill Clark; her father, Brooklyn D. Taylor and mother, Ada Dell Taylor; her brothers, Jay Douglas Taylor and Dalton Taylor; her sisters, Avalee Jean Taylor Potts, and Dorothy Taylor Dick, and Melba “Bobbie” LaFon; husband Arthur Hulley; Father of her children Burl Newman; son-in-law Bruce Atkinson; her great niece Marsha Dell Wisnewski; and best friend Polly Land in Florida.
An Order of the Eastern Star Ceremony was held Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at Allen Funeral Home, in Hurricane, followed by a graveside ceremony at Valley View Memorial Park in Hurricane.

Bryne Allen Jordan
Bryne Allen Jordan, 47 of Red House passed away December 8, 2024, in St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Bryne is a former Ironworker and currently working at F.L. Smidth. He is a 1995 graduate of Poca High School and enjoyed rugby, woodworking, writing, and drawing.
He is preceded in death by is grandmother Maxine Jordan.
He is survived by his daughter Mackenzie Jordan; companion Jamie Goddard; parents Mary and Dan Jordan; and brothers Daniel and Bobby Jordan. Bryne is also survived by a host of other family and friends.

Thomas Edward Miller
Thomas Edward Miller, 81, of Poca, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at home on Thursday, December 5, 2024.
Tom (Tommy or Papa to most) was born on October 12, 1943, to the late Thomas and Wanda in Nitro, but grew up in Bancroft. After Tommy graduated from Poca High School in 1961, he joined the US Navy in July of 1962. On December 8, 1962, he married his high school sweetheart and constant love of his life, Betty Hawley. They went on to have 4 children, 12 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
After leaving the Navy in 1968, he was in the construction industry before going on to a career as a Chemical Operator at PPG in Circleville, OH where he retired in 2005.
After his retirement, his life revolved around being a husband and Papa. He spent his time doing projects in and around the house, teaching grandkids how to fish, flashing his famous grin and chuckle, and always making sure they had plenty of snacks and a pool to swim in.
In 2020, Tommy accepted Jesus as his Lord and savior and has spent the past nearly 5 years being a fisher of men, studying his Bible, and rejoicing in his faith. He was excited to get to heaven, and that is now the only comfort for his heartbroken family, knowing that he is happy and healthy right where he longed to be.
Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Thomas, mother, Wanda, and stepfather, Joel Scott.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 62 years, Betty; children, Yvonne (Glenn Sr.), Thomas II (Nancy), Tausha (Kenny), Chad (Christa); grandchildren, Heather (Drannon), Glenn Jr., Holly (Garry), Adam (Chelsea), Melissa (Zach), Matt (Susan), Josh (Ashlee), Jonathan, Jason, Alyssa, Bree, and Bryson; great-grandchildren, Ruston, Adyson, Haidyn, Jenna, Norah, Keegan, Knox, Madeline, Olsen, Kamdyn, Harper, Kohen, Landon, Garrett, Brody, Bristol, Augustine, Oliver, India; great-great-grandchild Atlas; sister, Shirley Fetty (Andrew), step-brother Tony Scott, and step-sister Terri Mushrush.
He will also be dearly missed by a host of other family members and his wonderful Rock Branch Independent Church family.
Funeral service was held at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home in Poca on Monday, December 9.
Bburial was in Schowen Cemetery in Bancroft.

Ewing ‘J.R.’ Nolan, Jr.
Ewing “J.R.” Nolan, Jr., 59, of Poca, passed away December 3, 2024.
J.R. was born December 20, 1964, in Upland, PA and is a 1982 graduate of Poca High School and a graduate of WV State College. He is a retired Tool and Die Maker and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, football, baseball, writing, mathematics, and especially the New River Gorge.
He is preceded in death by his father Ewing “Gene” Nolan, Sr. and son Kyle Scott Nolan.
J.R. is survived by his loving and devoted mother, Mrs. Janie Nolan; daughters Kassie Jean Nolan and Marlea Regan Nolan; sister Lisa Ann Nolan; brother Reed Nolan; and niece Ashley Jane and her husband Josh McDaniels.
A tribute to the life of Ewing “J.R.” Nolan, Jr. was held Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating.

Katherine J. Risk
On December 1, 2024 Angels were dispatched from Heaven to carry our Mother, Grandmother, Sister and friend to her Heavenly Home.
Kathy was a wonderful Christian lady and shared her love of God throughout her life. Opening many churches, singing for the Lord and inviting many into her home for prayer. If she knew you she prayed for you. She was retired from the State of WV.
Kathy is preceded in death by her parents George and Lillian Brogan Williams. Siblings: Isabell Mason, Gary Williams and Billy Williams. Her youngest daughter Daytonia Hibbert and her loving husband George Risk.
Kathy is survived by her daughter Deborah Sue Mitchell (Jay),of Hurricane Gina Namay (Elliott) of Charleston. Grandchildren; Charity DeLouch (Ricky) of Richmond Hill GA, Chastity Fortson (Timmy) of Richmond Hill GA, Wendi Lucas (Shawn) of Hurricane WV, Missy Mitchell of Hurricane WV, John Runyon of Scott Depot WV and Eli Namay (Ruby) of PA; 16 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. Brothers Jack Williams and Gene Williams.
Kathy was adored by all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. The last year she has been loved on and cared for by 2 of her granddaughters and their families in Richmond Hill GA. She was treated like a princess. A special thank you to Olivia Fortson, Kathy’s great granddaughter for her dedicated and compassionate care of Kathy the last few months. Kathy will be missed by her partner in crime, her ganddaughter Missy.
Services were Saturday, December 7th, 2024, at Allen Funeral Home Hurricane. Entombment was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Johnny Bill Sanders
Johnny Bill Sanders, 78, of Scott Depot, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2024.
He was the cherished son of the late J. Bethel and Dollie Mae Wilcox Sanders born on August 7, 1946.
A proud veteran, Johnny served his country honorably in the United States Army as a member of the 24th Infantry Division during the Vietnam Era. His dedication to his country was a testament to his courage, strength, and unwavering sense of duty.
After his military service, Johnny worked as a long-haul truck driver, traveling the open roads he loved. He retired in 2008 from FMC Corp. after a fulfilling career marked by hard work and dedication. Johnny will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his wife, his passion for cars and his profound love for animals. Johnny and Donna were proud members of Grace Baptist Temple in St. Albans.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Donna Louise Jones Sanders; daughter, Melanie Sanders Coffey (James “PJ”); granddaughter, Katelyn Grace, currently of Fort Sam Houston, TX. He also leaves behind his sister, Betty Mae Spence of Jacksonville, FL; brother-in-law, Mike (Mary Lou) Jones; sister-in-law, Judy (Keith) Steele; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Johnny’s Life was held December 7, 2024 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Pastor Brian C. Dean officiating.

Elva Ernestine Terry
Elva “Sis” Terry, 67, of Poca, passed away on December 2, 2024 at WVU Thomas Hospital South Charleston with her family at her side.
She was born on December 17, 1956 to the late Ralph “Starky” and Virginia “Ginny” Leadmon Terry in South Charleston. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Leslie D. Meadows and a sister, Matt Randolph.
Sis is survived by her children: Amber L. (Kyle) Catlin of Winfield and David L. Meadows of Scott Depot, their father: Bennie Maxwell; grandchildren: Leslie Paige and JW Catlin; sisters: Lucy Hartley of Winfield, Ruby Hayes of Pliny, Grace Terry of Winfield, and Maxine Smith of Scott Depot; brother: Bob Terry of Winfield; niece: Allison Holley; nephews: Chris Randolph and Brian Hartley; great niece: Hope Hartley; as well as several other family members and friends.
Funeral service for Sis was Friday, December 6, 2024 at Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield, with Pastor Brian Dean officiating. Burial was in Terry-Leadmon Cemetery, Winfield.
