The Hurricane City Council meeting of October 6 was called to order by Recorder Linda Gibson in the absence of Mayor Scott Edwards. City Manager Andy Skidmore was also absent.
The meeting, while short, was not without significant business. Council held the first reading of an ordinance to annex the property which once was the home to the Fairview Trailer Park. The parcel, also known as the Atkinson Property, is located just to the eastern terminus of Fairview Drive. The property was gifted to the city by the Atkinson family with the stipulation that it be utilized as a park for children in the Taylor Addition. The Taylor Addition consists of the property developed by Dalton Taylor in the 1960’s. It includes Taylor Street, Caroline Circle, Ada Dell Avenue, Melrose Drive, Charles Court, and Catherine Drive in addition to Fairview Drive.
The council also conducted the first reading of an ordinance to annex parcels adjacent to 304 at Valley Pointe. The parcels are home to Human Bean, DG Market, Wendy’s and a vacant lot.
In routine business, council held first readings of ordinances relating to the duties of Building Code Enforcement Official.
Council approved the rezoning of 2828 Virginia Avenue from single family residential to multi-family residential. The property has been utilized as a multi-family dwelling under a grandfather clause. The new property owner was required to obtain the zoning change in order to use the property as it has been used for many, many years.
