A Lot of Squirrel Food

The large black walnut tree in the front yard of the Ranch (Breeze office) on Hurricane Creek Road released its bounty last week. Black walnuts are a valuable food source for squirrels. The tree rodents use their strong teeth to crack the hard shells to get the high-protein nutmeat inside, but it takes persistence and hard work. The hard shell of a black walnut is a challenge. Squirrels will spend up to 40 minutes chewing a hole on either side or along the seam to get to the nutmeat.
