NENA MARLENE ELLIOTT
Nena Marlene Elliott, of Dunbar, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 17, 2025.
Nena was a graduate of Poca High School and a former member of Elizabeth Baptist Church in Bancroft. She spent many years working in retail, including with K-Mart in Teays Valley and the Nitro Wal-Mart, where she made many friendships along the way. A longtime resident of the Myers Avenue Apartments, Nena had always enjoyed time with her family and over the years almost always had a pet dog keeping her company.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Merle and Midge Phalen; brother, Merle Franklin Phalen; and sisters, Carolyn McGrew, Marilyn Saunders, and Ethel Moses.
Left to cherish her memory are her siblings, Tena Dye, Bertha Phalen, and Larry Phalen; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will remember her with love.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no services.
DARLENE FOSTER
Darlene Foster, 67, of Scott Depot, passed away peacefully at home on November 15, 2025.
Darlene was born November 3, 1958, in Dunbar, to the late Hustion and Erma Ruth Foster. She was a graduate of Winfield High School. After graduation, she spent two memorable summers working at Bronco Junction Camp. She later became a proud member of the United Steelworkers Local #14614 in Nitro and was employed with Fletchers Fence and Wire, which later became Gilbert and Bennett Corporation.
Darlene had a love for simple joys—reading and writing poetry, spending time outdoors, and tending to her garden. She was a woman of strong faith, a devoted Christian, and a member of Rock Branch Independent Church.
She is survived by her brother, Dale (Sharon) Foster; nephew Jeremy Foster; great-nephew Owen; great-nieces Christina and Haylee; and her beloved dog, Tino. She is also survived by a host of great neighbors and friends.
A tribute to the life of Darlene was held Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.
BERTIE MAE HARRIS
Bertie Mae Harris, 81, of Hurricane, passed away on November 10, 2025 at Genesis Putnam Center, Hurricane, after a long illness.
She was born to the late Alvin F. and Tressie Petry Eggleton on August 15, 1944 at the family homestead in Scott Depot. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Helen L. Butler; and her brother, Elton E. Eggleton.
Bertie Mae cherished her family and brought smiles, laughter, and love to all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Christina R. Harris; sons: Edward R. Harris II and Shannon D. Harris; granddaughters: Brenna P. Harris and Lillyenne R. Harris; grandson, Jacob D. Sutton; great-grandson, Arthur S. Holbert; brother-in-law, Robert D. Butler; and several nieces and nephews.
At Bertie Mae’s request, there will be no services.
CONNIE Y. LEADMON
Connie Yvonne Bird Leadmon, 88, of Hurricane, passed away on November 13, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born to the late Noah D. and Eva C. Bell Bird on January 3, 1937 in Garrets Bend. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Eva Dawn Leadmon; and siblings: Roy, Henry, Howard, Ronald, Shella, Lorraine, Frank and Carl.
She had worked several years for the Putnam County Board of Education as a Cook, mostly serving in the Hurricane area and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Connie is survived by her loving husband of over 70 Years, Donald R. Leadmon; daughters: Suzy (Greg) Leadmon Dunn of Scott Depot, and Kristi (Jeffrey) Leadmon Suggs of Indian Land, SC; grandson, Alex Dunn of St. Albans, and granddaughter, Katy Dunn of Scott Depot; great granddaughters: Dicee and Tristyn.
A Celebration of Life Service was held Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum, Hurricane, with Pastors Mark Kilburn, Mark Ruby, and Colton O’Brian officiating.
BARBARA ELLEN LUIKART
Barbara Ellen Luikart, 60, of Leon, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.
Barbara lived a life full of kindness, laughter, and adventure. She spent many years working as an accountant, a career that took her all across the United States. Wherever she went, she made friends easily and left people smiling. She loved taking cruises, camping with her family, and simply enjoying time outdoors.
To those who knew her best, Barbara was affectionately known as “Meash” to her children and “Nana” to her grandchildren, titles she treasured most of all. She was the heart of her family, always ready with a warm hug, a listening ear, and a word of encouragement.
Born April 17, 1965, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Bessie (Deal) Rutledge. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Janet Minor, and her nephew, Jason Rutledge.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 43 years, Clarence Luikart; her children, Clarence Justin Luikart Westerville, OH, and Tiffanie (Josh) Dillon of Dublin, OH; her beloved grandchildren, Benjamin and Gavin Luikart; her sisters, Mary Luikart of West Virginia and Charlotte Richardson of Buffalo; and her brothers, Jerry Rutledge of Gallipolis, Kenneth Rutledge of Florida, Barry Rutledge of Leon, and Lloyd Thomas Rutledge Jr. of Cardington, OH. She is also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Funeral service was Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Raynes Funeral Home in Buffalo. Burial was in Shiloah Cemetery in Red House.
GLENN JONES
Glenn David Jones, 71, of Hurricane, passed away on November 10th.
He was born on February 22nd, 1954 to George and Marion Jones of Kearney, NJ.
After graduating from Kearny High School in 1972, Glenn went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Marietta College in 1976 where he was the president of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and a Masters of Education from Boston University in 1988.
In 1981, Glenn proudly enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a Non-Morse Intercept Operator during multiple tours across Texas, Germany, and California. In 1982, he earned a diploma from the Department of Defense Language Institute, achieving fluency in both German and Russian.
Glenn married Deborah (Esch) Jones on September 5, 2007.
He was an avid sports enthusiast with a lifelong passion for the New York Mets and the New York Giants. He cherished his Wednesday evenings spent with his trivia team and found great joy in his love of model trains.
Glenn is predeceased in death by his parents, George and Marion, and his brother, Wayne of New Mexico.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie; his children Elizabeth and David; his step children, Jocelyn, Coleman (Amy) and Megan (Chad); his three grandchildren, Alec, Coleman, and Ellie; and his lil buddy Maggie.
Visitation was Friday, November 14, 2025 at Allen Funeral Home.
REV. CHARLES MARKER
Reverend Charles Larry Marker went home to be with Jesus and his late wife, Merdith, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on January 30, 1940, in Hurricane, to the late Chester and Xenil Marker. He graduated from Hurricane High School.
Reverend Marker was the pastor at Heights United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant. For more than 60 years, he dedicated his life to serving the Lord and his various congregations including Hamlin Church of the Nazarene, Lens Creek Church of the Nazarene, Moundsville Nazarene, Newell First Church of the Nazarene, Point Pleasant First Church of the Nazarene, as well as Heights United Methodist Church. He maintained contact with many of his congregants from all over the state and considered them all friends.
Charles will be remembered for many things including his unwavering faith, his love for his family, his boisterous personality, and his sense of humor. He never met a stranger. To him, every person in the world was a friend he hadn’t met yet.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Merdith (Searls) Marker. Also preceding him in death were his grandson Jacob Dixon of Gallipolis, OH and his parents Chester Clay and Xenil (McCallister) Marker of Hurricane.
Charles leaves behind a large family whom he loved deeply, including two sons: Charles (Tina) Marker/Darmohray of Livermore, CA and John (Renee) Marker of Palm Bay, FL; two daughters: Stephanie (John) Dixon of Gallipolis, OH and Vanessa (Russell) Jewell of Battle Creek, MI; sixteen surviving grandchildren: Janelle (Robert) Marker/Walker of San Mateo, CA, Deanna (Chris) Watts of Point Pleasant, Garrett (Carly) Marker of Tiburon, CA, Amanda (Nathan) Stafford of Ona, WV, John William (Samantha) Marker of Mechanicsville, VA, Craig (Reetu) Marker of San Diego, CA, Ashleigh (Jesse) Bolyard of Green Bank, WV, Reagan (Brendan) Sturgill, McKinley, Harrison, Kennedy, Monroe, Truman and Jackson Jewell, all of Battle Creek, MI, Abraham Dixon of Gallipolis, OH and Annie-Grace (Austin) Trammell from Essex Junction, VT; seven great grandchildren: Hayes and Mason Stafford of Ona, Adeline and Jonas Bolyard of Green Bank, WV, Corinne Walker of San Mateo, CA, Milo and Rome Marker of San Diego CA, and Reese Marker of Tiburon, CA; and two sisters: Gayle (Gary) Berry and Alwilda (Steve) Johnson, both of Hurricane.
Service was Saturday, November 15, at the Heights United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant with the Marker children, grandchildren, and family friend, Pastor Claire Cottrill officiating. Burial was in Kirkland Memorial Gardens in Point Pleasant.
Brandi Dawn McCormick
Brandi Dawn McCormick, 39, of Hurricane, passed away Monday, November 10, 2025, at home.
She was a homemaker and loved spending time outdoors, camping and fishing.
Brandi is survived by her life partner, Brian Alford, children, Brayden McCormick, Colton McCormick, Bentley Alford and Kaiven Alford, parents, Jeff and Gini McCormick, and sisters, Teaira White and Kassie McCormick.
Service was Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.
David Morris
David A. Morris, 61, from Charleston, formerly of Hurricane, past peacefully on November 8, 2025, surrounded by love and laughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Dreama Morris and brother Jim Morris.
David is survived by his wife, Nancey (Dunn) Morris, daughters Emily Bell, Allyssia Johnson, Hope Morris and stepson DJ Moore. Also survived by several grandchildren and fur babies. His sisters Gwen Thomas and Gina (Benny) Davis. Also an extended family of nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces.
He was a volunteer fireman and a construction worker, all of which he loved being.
David was a Father figure too many and a Pawpaw to the wee folk.
He will be forever loved and greatly missed.
David ‘Doc’ Nelles
‘David W.M. “Doc” Nelles, 67, of Winfield, passed away on November 14, 2025, at WVU Thomas Memorial Hospital.
‘Born in Springville, New York, Doc was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and M. Jevohne Nelles; his twin brother, Dale Nelles; and his sister, Debra Nelles.
‘Doc lived a life marked by service, dedication, and courage. He was a proud retired firefighter and Federal Fire Marshal, committing his career to protecting others. He also honorably served in the United States Navy for 25 years. Doc continued his service to community and country as a member of the Winfield American Legion Post #187.
‘He is survived by his loving wife, Marissa Banks; his children, Kamila, Aaleeyah, and Mihlah Banks; mother-in-law, Lynn Banks; sister, Diane (Timothy) Letourineau; niece, Steffanie Scott; nephew, James (Nicole) Scott; and great-nephews, Jacob and Matthew Scott.
‘In keeping with Doc’s wishes, there will be no public services at this time.
Chris Weddington
Chris Alan Weddington, 59, of Hurricane, went to be with the Lord on November 11, 2025 after an extended illness.
He was a graduate of Hurricane High School Class of 1984 and Employee of Sleepy Hollow Golf Club.
Chris was preceded in death by his father, John “Bud” Weddington, and his mother, Ruby L. Weddington.
He is survived by his son CJ Weddington, sister, Karen (Rick) Bennett, brothers, Ron (Sandy) Weddington, and Tim (Jennifer) Weddington, all of Hurricane, and several nieces and nephews.
Chris will be remembered for his quick and funny wit, his love of nature, and the joy he brought into the lives of those around him. His legacy of love and kindness will remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
Following Chris’s wishes there will be no services. He will be deeply missed and remembered.
Susan Ellen Young
Susan Ellen Alford Young, 63, of Hurricane, passed away on November 6, 2025 at Ohio State University Medical Center while bravely fighting cancer.
She was born to Glenna L. Monk Alford-Roush and the late Herman Maurice Alford on October 14, 1962 in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to her father, she was also preceded in death by her husband, John Young; and step father, Will Roush.
Susan was a giver, she found great happiness in helping others or baking to make someone’s day and see them smile. She was a Christian, who started her days with a devotional that helped her keep her faith until her last day. She also enjoyed hunting and being a member of the NRA. Susan worked for over 32 years at Putnam General Hospital and later becoming CAMC Teays Valley in Dietary.
She is survived by her loving family and in addition to her mother, there is also her son: Nathan (Ashley) Young; boyfriend, Charlie Taylor; grandchildren: Kyndra, Jesse, and Colter all of Hurricane; sister, Marilyn (Bob Ewing) Hedrick of Grove City, OH; step brother, Toby (Danita) Roush of Bonita Springs, FL; her cat: Mommy Kitty; and many other loving family members and friends.
Memorial service for Susan was Friday, November 14, 2025 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane.
