Construction workers position a concrete barrier at the entrance to Hurricane City Park on Monday, January 19.
The bridge spanning Mill Creek at the entrance to Hurricane City Park was upgraded from one lane to two lanes about ten years ago. On Monday, January19, contractors placed a concrete barrier in the entrance lane, returning the bridge to one-lane traffic. The barrier will allow for the supporting structure to be upgraded and the bridge to be widened.
The project consists of two phases. During the first phase the contractor will add one precast box beam to the western side of the bridge. This will widen the bridge by the width of the beam. Upon beam installation, the widened lane will be repaved. During the second phase, traffic will shift from the eastern side (Teays Valley side) of the bridge and existing girder beams will be replaced with new precast box beams.
The project will involve abutment work that includes drilling for piling, piling placement, placement of precast concrete box beams, removal and replacement of the existing impermeable membrane and blacktop.
The projected completion date is June 11th, 2026. The construction is expected to result in minor delays to traffic on Teays Valley Road.
