Centennial History of Hurricane (1994 Edition): Walter Lee Wood

In 1988, The Centennial History of Hurricane, WV was published to commemorate the town’s 100th anniversary. In 1994, the Centennial Committee published a follow up book which included family histories which were not submitted in time for the 1988 Centennial History. This week’s selection is the 51st history from The Centennial History of Hurricane WV Continued — 1994.

WALTER LEE WOOD

Walter Lee Wood was born January 22, 1894. He was a son of John Henry and Ruth Fanny Carpenter Wood. John Henry was born August 28, 1852 and Ruth Fanny was born April 3, 1862.

Walter was one of twelve children born to John and Ruth: Lemual, Eli Lidi, Ethel, Clate, Saint, Samuel, Joseph, Mack, Lula and Bertha.

Walter was married to Lena Margaret Smallridge, February 10, 1914. To this marriage was born: Eula, Sabie, Herbert, Junior, Arvil, and Inez.
Lena’s parents were Cephas and Mary Susan Manning Smallridge. Lena had one brother, Lonnie, and two half-sisters, Alta and Catha.

Walter was a farmer most of his life, in addition to being a carpenter’s helper at times. He also was a minister, having preached at several local churches.
