Horse Show Produces Scholarship Funds

Macy Cunningham, 14, competed with her horse Big Booty Judy. A former student from George Washington Middle School, she is now enrolled in Sissonville High School, where she is a member of the FFA. The 6th Annual Punam County Fair Horse Show was held on Saturday, August 2, at the Winfield Riding Club. The event was open to all ages, with both children and adults completing in forty different classes. Some of the classes included barrel racing, a costume contest for both riders and horses, and various gaits such as walking and trotting. Around 50 people competed in the show, most of whom came from Putnam and Kanawha Counties.

The horse show is a fundraiser for the Derek Casto Memorial Scholarship for youth in 4-H and Future Farmers of America. The scholarship provides $500 to high school seniors and recent graduates for higher education. The money can be used for college or trade school, depending upon which career path an individual wishes to take.

Samaria Cobb, one of the event coordinators, thanks everyone who participated in the show, as well as the Winfield Riding Club for their facility.

The scholarship was named in honor of Derek Casto, who was a former president of the Putnam County Fair board. Casto was also very involved in the local horse scene.
